The theme for 2022 UL week seeks to look at our current growth patterns and how they relate to environmental limits. Resource scarcity, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions as a result of rapid population growth, unsustainable business models, and dependence on non-renewable sources of energy have made us consider if our modes of development are outpacing the earth’s capacity to sustain life equitably. Addressing the planet’s ecological limits extends to our understanding of its effects on social and economic systems. The depletion of natural systems forces us to reckon with how many people have access to basic resources, at what level of wealth, and for how long.
