Stagiair wo – Integral Designer Public Space
Gemeente Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands
2 Internships ,
Minimum 32 hours, for 6 months
Starting date: february/march 2025
The city is facing several new large and radical challenges such as energy transition, climate adaptation,
circularity, mobility, biodiversity and digitization. The lack of space due to urban growth both above and
below ground require different working methods using system innovations and require even better
cooperation in the chain to enable the developments in the field of data-driven work and BIM. We are
therefore looking for an intern who recognizes himself in this integral approach.
Function
Do you want to gain experience from your studies in an interdisciplinary team where sustainability and
innovation are the common thread running through area development as well as public space? Then
contribute to the team Designing Public Space.
As part of an interdisciplinary team, you will work on various tasks and themes.
The tasks you can work on are:
•Design studies/exploratory studies;
• making concrete contributions to integral designs for or in public space from initiative to final,
including coordination with all relevant disciplines;
• Participating in project groups and partnerships with external parties;
• Participating in internal debates, theme meetings and workshops.
You will be linked to 1 person who will guide you during your learning process. Learning on the job by
doing.
Join our team and work on challenging and innovative projects that contribute to creating a more
sustainable and future-proof city. You can choose from three different projects to participate in:
1. Urban Ecological Water Quality
Contribute to a publication about water quality in urban areas. You will research ecological
aspects and help share knowledge on improving urban water management.
2. Area Development Tool for CO2 Calculation
Assist in developing a tool to calculate CO2 emissions for public spaces. This tool supports
policymakers and designers in making sustainable choices during area development.
3. Parametric Street Profile Tool for Designers
Help develop a parametric tool that supports designers in creating both above-ground and
underground urban elements. The tool not only ensures flexibility in design but also enables
conflict detection between above-ground and underground infrastructure. This contributes to
better-integrated and more efficient designs.

The Organisation
The municipal organization consists of five clusters, an administrative and concern staff and seven
administrative committees (districts). The city districts govern the city of Amsterdam together with the
city council, mayor and aldermen. The Spatial and Economy, Social, Services and Information, Internal
Services and Urban Management clusters consist of departments that have expertise in a specific field,
such as sports, youth or parking. They develop policy into city-wide frameworks within which the city
districts can carry out the executive work. They also offer direct support to residents who need it, for
example in the field of participation or work. The districts are involved in, among other things, the design
of streets and squares, greenery and parks and welfare work in the neighbourhood. They make sure that
what they do fits the needs of their district and the policies for the entire city. More information about
the municipal organization can be found at: https://www.amsterdam.nl/
The client(s)
The municipality of Amsterdam wants to accelerate sustainability in the city. The acceleration requires
decisive collaboration with Amsterdammers, companies, social parties and knowledge institutions. No
one alone makes the difference. This is what we stand for as the Sustainability Department of the
Municipality of Amsterdam. We work together with residents, companies, visitors and other
departments of the municipality of Amsterdam on the transition to: a green, healthy city, a circular
economy and a city that runs on sustainable energy. We want to be a diverse and inclusive organization
that offers space for everyone. Diversity is a strength we use to get better results for the city. We strive
for a workforce that reflects the workforce of Amsterdam, with all its differences.
